OM1682A precision triac control thermostat IC now the preferred version to replace the OM1682
Current users of the OM1682, precision triac control thermostat have been advised that this product has been replaced by the OM1682A. Orders will no longer be accepted for the OM1682.
The OM1682A is a derivative of the OM1682 with additional logic control access that allows the monitoring of the input as well as providing external control of the triac drive.
The pin assignment of the OM1682A is identical to the OM1682, but with the additional logic functions using the previously unused pins. The OM1682A can be used as an OM1682 if required, with pins 1(SW), 4(LOT) and 9(LIN) left unconnected.
Please refer to the OM1682A product page. Note also that some older application information may still refer to the OM1682, but please refer to the note on the front page of this information.
The OM1682A is suited for a wide range of both domestic and industrial application, extending from the zero-crossing control of a heating element to the control of fan motors including other complex loads.

Integrated Electronic Solutions wins Gold Cup for excellence in engineering and commercialisation
Integrated Electronics Solutions (IES) has won the South Australian Electronics Industry Association’s (EIA) Gold Cup award for 2006.
This award recognises excellence in innovation and commercialisation of a project that makes a major contribution to the goals of the company. The outcome of the award winning project was a multi-million delivery of integrated circuits that is now used by a major US company in their extensive range of high quality solar powered garden and architectural lighting products.
The EIA Gold Cup has been awarded each year since 1984, to the company that performs best overall in taking an innovative idea through the product development and manufacturing processes and finally achieve success in global markets.
IES’s integrated circuit, capable of operating well below 1V DC, has a key feature in its ability to provide single or multiple LED drive from a single AA cell rechargeable battery. The smart high efficiency charging circuit incorporated in the integrated circuit ensures that the battery has the maximum charge available to reliably give up to 8 hours light operation. These features translate into a low cost solution whilst maintaining high efficiency light control.
The integrated circuit designed was so effective that the US manufacturer now uses this high performing solution for almost their entire range of solar powered lighting products. Hence, many millions of this integrated circuit is sold annually into a highly competitive marketplace.

IES5541A - Engineering Samples Now Available
The new IES5541A RELAY CONTACT PROTECTION integrated circuit from Integrated Electronic Solutions offers higher reliability and extended lifetime of mains electromechanical relays.
The IES5541A brings new contact protection technology to mains relay switching. IES5541A allows mains relays to be driven while protecting their contacts from arcing. The use of IES5541A is proven to provide effective mains relays arc suppression compared with discrete protection circuits.
IES5541A is compatible with most mains power electromechanical relays. Ideal for temperature control applications with relays used in electric frypans, oven, irons and other relay switched mains power control applications.

New relay contact protection, IES5541 increases relay reliability
Many mains driven electronic control systems and other electronically controlled equipment and appliances use relays to control the “ON-OFF” function and other operational features. The arcing resulting from switching of high currents in this type of situation can result in damage to contacts and also the generation of excessive levels of RFI. Circuits have been devised to minimize these issues, but now a better solution is available.
The IES5541, integrated circuit from Integrated Electronic Solutions gives patented relay contact protection capable of extending the relay operating life while minimizing the RFI associated with non-protected relay switching, will shortly be released to the market for people who need a smarter way of relay contact protection. The IES5541 has been tested for effective contact protection, compared to no protection, where operating under similar load and switching conditions.
The reliability improvement is astounding, giving an extra performance factor of up to 100 times the switching cycle life beyond the failure point of non-protected relays. This can therefore enhance relay operation many more times than the specified 100,000 load switches. A truly remarkable improvement!
In addition, the IES5541 allows the relay to be switched at a higher frequency than normally rated 1800 operations per hour to provide tighter temperature control for use in fry pan or cook tops. Release of OM5428 Mains Phase Control Integrated Circuit
Release Status : 10th October 2005
Integrated Electronic Solutions announces the release of the OM5428 Integrated Circuit. This integrated circuit is an alternative to the TCA280B, which has been used as a basic phase control integrated circuit for many years. The TCA280B should not be used for new designs, as it is now formally listed as obsolete.

Avnet EM acquires Memec / Impact
We advise our customers that Avnet EM has recently acquired our distributor, Memec globally, and as a result will restructure and/or combine their activities with full details of the new business structure to be shortly announced. Integrated Electronic Solutions will as a consequence be represented by Avnet EM Asia. The details of this arrangement are currently being finalized, but we expect finalization of this agreement to be in place shortly. OM1654 and IES5521 - temperature control IC's for hair styling tools : A new 1 hour or variable “time-out” timer
Integrated Electronic Solutions is pleased to announce the immanent release of the IES5521, an addition to the OM1654; a low cost triac control used in temperature control applications, as a flexible integrated circuit to be used in various hair styling tools. These include hair straighteners, hair crimpers, curling irons, hair dryers and hot rollers.
The OM1654 has been designed by Integrated Electronic Solutions as a simple, low cost zero-crossing triac control circuit. Due to limited space for electronic circuitry in hair styling tools, design engineers can take advantage of OM1654 small size packaging (SO-8 package) and low external component count for control application. OM1654 also features zero-crossing triac switching for low electro-magnetic interference (EMI) operation.
The addition of a "time out" timer in the IES5521 now extends the capability of the control integrated circuit for new markets. "Time out" refers to the time allowed for operation before the IES5521 switches the heating off. A period other than the fixed one-hour time out, ranging from 1minute to more than 5 hours is also possible with the addition of external components. "Time out" is seen as a safety feature in applications such as hair straighteners and curling irons.
Customers of Integrated Electronic Solutions have gained the benefits of reduced cost in electronic circuitry while achieving excellent result in overall product performance. The OM1654 and the IES5521 are an efficient and cost effective solution for precision temperature control applications.

"Sales and Marketing Seminar 2005"
During April our international distributors visited us in Adelaide for an intensive three day Sales and Marketing Seminar. The key personnel within the business delivered information sessions on our range of integrated circuit products, their applications and some typical benefits in using these devices. The distributors also discussed the typical issues in their regions, and the customer issues that regularly confront them.
We were also able to provide in depth technical training sessions on the performance and selection process for the range of integrated circuits and also of the range and selection criteria for Philips triacs that can be used with our products.
The main objective of the seminar is to enable our distributors to better service our customers with up to date information technical data and training information. We also developed strategies to improve our customer services.
We are confident that our distributors are now better informed on the current product range performance and application, to now give better support and advice to you, our customers, on both the products and applications in your current products and for new designs.

This note is to update interested parties on the release status progress of the OM5428, an alternative to the TCA280B.

As at the date of this bulletin, the product is not yet released. No guarantees can yet be given for a release date and production deliveries. The qualification procedure is still in progress and we expect completion late 3rd quarter 2005. We will update this bulletin once a release date is confirmed.
Meanwhile, engineering samples are available, and can be requested via Customer Service.
The TCA280B should not be used for new designs, but can be made available in small quantities for after-market and service replacement, until further notice of complete obsolescence from Integrated Electronic Solutions is given.

"Mechanical Control v's Electronic Control"
There are many examples where mechanical controllers have been traditionally used to control mains power to an appliance, product or in an industrial application. Further complex mechanical systems systems have also been developed and applied over a period of time, to give operational feedback of temperature and other performance parameters.
It is becoming common that electronic control solutions are now replacing the existing electro / mechanical controllers.
It has taken some time for electronics to be accepted, as the mechanical controllers in one form or another for more than half a century, and much continuing development has been caried out to maintain lower costs and extend reliability of operation and lifetime. Yet still the mechanical controllers generally have questionable reliablity, and are often limited by the inaccuracy and spreads of the mechanical sensors, particularly where the degree of accuracy is critical.
Electronics can now provide temperature control with high reliablity, and high accuracy, at a resonable cost.
Integrated Electronic Solutions has a family of integrated circuits, specifically designed for mains powered control, and easily applied in the thermostat and appliance controller market.
These IC's are specifically designed for efficient and reliable triac control, accurate temperature preset or control, and are simple to design and apply. In fact, analogue design of sense and control has never been so easy.
These chips can be further extended to include circuitry for additional timing and logic. No software is required.

"New Phase Control IC OM5428 replaces TCA280B"
Since the early 70's, the TCA280B has set the standard for applications that called for precise phase control firing of Triacs. Now Integrated Electronic Solutions has designed the OM5428, an all new IC that has all the features of the TCA280B with the advantage of -ve gate drive, thus reducing the required supply current.
The OM5428 will be ideal for motor speed control in evaporative airconditioners or other control fan applications. It will also well suited for use in commercial and domestic light dimmer applications to mention a few. The OM5428 will be available in SO-16 and DIP-16 packaging.
For a technical overview, the OM5428 Data Sheet is now available on this website and it is expected that engineering samples will be available through our Customer Service in early Q1 2005.

"New LED Driver circuit finds wide applications"
Light emitting diodes have been widely used in display and light source applications for many years. The range of available LEDs has expanded considerably in recent times with further applications in new markets now becoming evident.
The range of light output levels, colours, package size, and of course cost, have all become considerations in extending the range of applications. Driver integrated circuits are available for LCD displays lighting and other portable consumer products.
Integrated Electronic Solutions, recognising the need for a simple cost effective driver circuit has recently released a LED driver integrated circuit OM5448, to simplify and extend LED drive capabilities. This chip enables designers to easily control brightness in the drive of LED circuits, with minimal power supply loading, and the benefit of minimal package outline of SOT23-5 for low printed circuit board profiles.
The OM5448 Product Overview information is now available on the website, and a full data sheet will soon be available and the IC can be sampled through our Customer Service.

"New Design Tools Speed Product Development"
At Integrated Electronic Solutions, we constantly seek to improve our services to customers, particularly by offering higher levels of integrated circuit design capability, with the benefits of shorter design leadtimes, with higher first loop success rates.
We have now completed the upgrade of our Integrated Circuit (IC) design facilities by the installation of new Intel(R) Pentium(R) IV computers configured with RedHat(R) Linux(R) 9, giving us a fast, flexible and reliable platform to develop our next generation of products.
Dual screen, 20" LCD flat panel monitors provide ample viewing area for even the most complex of designs, with a clean crisp high contrast display, while still leaving plenty of desk space for referring to schematic plots and manuals.
New state-of-the-art design software from Paragon IC Solutions enables cost effective design of ICs and familiarity of use, without compromising on the design performance levels provided by other "high end" tools. When combined with Philips(R) PSTAR(R) simulation software, which includes detailed bipolar models, this suite of tools provides an excellent development platform for analogue and mixed-signal ICs.
To top it off, a refurbishment of the offices - new carpets, furniture and paintwork - have given our design team an excellent environment for new product development.

In a recent visit, Mr John Clarke, Director of Clere Electronic Components accepted the certificate of appointment from John Simpson. In appointing Clere Electronic Components, we now have a great source of technical support and distribution for customers within the UK.

"Green Packing"
Integrated Electronic Solutions introduces "Green Packing" for integrated circuits.
Higher levels of environment friendly products have been a major push for the electronics industry for some time now, as standards have been developed to address many of the environmental issues.
We are pleased to announce that IES will be introducing further environmental improvements in our integrated circuits with the gradual change to environmentally friendly epoxy integrated circuit packaging, (so called "Green" packaging ) to follow the use of "lead-free" mounting frames and connections in our standard device packaging.
These improvements are currently in final approval stages, and will be introduced over the coming months. This will be identifiable with a lead free symbol on the packaging label.

Commercial Refrigeration

The stand alone commercial refrigeration market is growing world wide, with applications stretching from Cool Drink and Beverage through to more sophisticated Fresh Food and Medical Product refrigeration.
The low end Cool Drink and Beverage commercial refrigeration market is becoming more demanding in terms of performance, self-diagnostics and lowering of maintenance costs.

Module Assemblies gain wide acceptance in Thermostatic Management applications.
